The Mossel Bay Artist Who Conquered New York
A story the world almost never heard — until now. Originally published October 2011 · Revisited March 2026
Maria Magdalena Oosthuizen · Artist
A Small Town Artist. One of the World's Greatest Galleries.
In October 2011, an artist from Mossel Bay boarded a plane to New York City. Her name was Maria Magdalena Oosthuizen — known simply as Maria — and she was about to show her work at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, one of the most celebrated contemporary art spaces in the world. Back home, almost nobody knew it was happening.
There was no Instagram post. No viral TikTok. No Facebook reel shared in the Mossel Bay community groups. Social media as we know it today simply didn't exist in the way it does now. A small local newspaper article was published, a few people read it, and the moment quietly passed. But the achievement? That was extraordinary.
"Your complex and enigmatic work such as 'Worship' has a universal vision and vibrancy — it challenges the viewer to concepts beyond our normal vision."
Chelsea, New York — The World Was Watching
The Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, New York, is described as one of the most prestigious contemporary art galleries in the world. It actively seeks out and develops contemporary artists, with the mission of ultimately launching them onto the world stage as great masters of the 21st century.
Maria's work caught their attention through the internet, when gallery curator Arnelda reached out via email after discovering her art online. After reviewing her portfolio, Maria received a formal invitation for an American tour, beginning 9 October 2011.
More Than an Artist — A Force
Maria has called Mossel Bay home since 2007, and over nearly two decades she has quietly built one of the most respected artistic practices in the region. Francois Oosthuizen remains an indispensable part of the House of Maria team — handling administration, logistics, and business affairs that flow from the activities of an artist of Maria's calibre.
In 2010, she was a finalist for the Mossel Bay Sakekamer Entrepreneur of the Year award — proof that her impact extended well beyond the canvas. Her belief in her art is deeply personal: she says painting is the greatest inspiration for her work, and that the answer to the question of how a painter finds love is expressed on every completed canvas.
Why this matters in 2026
Mossel Bay has produced a world-class artist whose work hangs in collections classified alongside the top sellers in South Africa. Her story of quiet determination, international recognition, and local roots is one that deserves to be celebrated — loudly, and proudly.
In 2011, we didn't have the tools to share this story. In 2026, we do.
From Mossel Bay to The World
Over 3,000 original paintings sold. Works collected locally and internationally. Each canvas a reflection of light, faith, and the human spirit.
